Ian Schrager introduces PUBLIC West Hollywood, a new independent hotel concept
Ian Schrager 在洛杉矶西好莱坞推出了名为 PUBLIC West Hollywood 的全新独立酒店概念。该酒店融合了住宅、办公和酒店元素,75% 的公共空间位于户外,并设有私人公园 The Roof。

PUBLIC West Hollywood marks a new chapter in hospitality entrepreneur Ian Schrager’s career. The independent hotel concept brings together residential, office and hotel influences. Moreover, it reflects Schrager’s longstanding approach to challenging conventional hospitality models.
For five decades, Schrager has pursued ideas beyond established hospitality conventions. His career began with the cultural impact of Studio 54 in 1977. Since then, he has developed more than 40 original hotels worldwide. He has also introduced concepts across restaurants, bars, nightclubs and entertainment venues.
His work has focused on more than architecture, design and nightlife. Instead, Schrager has explored how hospitality reflects society, culture and changing lifestyles. His projects have sought to capture the spirit of their time and anticipate cultural developments.
Reflecting on his career, Schrager said: “It’s been a really great ride. I’ve always sought to go where no one else has gone. To stand alone. To always be subversive to the status quo. To be rebellious, always break the rules, go off into uncharted territory, and blaze a new trail. It’s what makes me breathe. In fact, it’s the only reason I am still at it today. It’s a thrill for me and tremendously gratifying to continue to astonish people and blow them away. I’ve always found that the inherent trap, contradiction and danger of success is either in repeating yourself or abandoning what made you successful in the first place.
Despite this apparent contradiction, I have always sought to create something that is so well conceived and executed, it couldn’t possibly be copied. You can always tell the real thing from the replica. This is where the magic lies — where the total what’s created is more than the sum of the individual parts, and where completely unlikely and disparate elements come together to create something truly surprising, unique and that has never been done before… that’s the secret sauce and the pixie dust.”
A hotel shaped by the contrasts of Southern California
That approach informs PUBLIC West Hollywood. The concept combines seemingly opposing influences, including rebellion and refinement. Similarly, it brings together sophistication and disruption.
Southern California provides the setting for this vision. Nature and urban life, glamour and comfort, energy and calm coexist across the region. In addition, Los Angeles offers access to deserts, mountains, snow-covered peaks, canyons and beaches. The region has long represented freedom, reinvention and independence. Its sunshine, landscapes and outdoor lifestyle continue to attract visitors and residents. Against this background, PUBLIC West Hollywood draws on the character of Los Angeles without relying on familiar clichés.
The hotel combines influences from residential, office and hospitality environments. However, it rejects conventional labels and standardised lifestyle-hotel formulas. Schrager describes it as an independent hotel with its own identity and perspective. The concept also challenges familiar hotel features. It does not include a traditional front desk or a celebrity chef-led dining concept. Furthermore, guestrooms avoid bulky televisions and unnecessary design details. The approach instead prioritises intimacy, warmth, connection and comfort.

Schrager also distinguishes the project from the boutique-hotel category. He originally introduced that concept in 1982 with Morgans. However, he argues that the category has since evolved into broader lifestyle and marketing classifications.
He explained the creative process behind his projects: “It’s a one-of-a-kind editing process that requires constant Observation. It’s quite challenging because we never know which detail is the detail that will push a project over the top. I have always outworked everybody else and worked with the most talented people in the world, who never even worked on hotels before, by the way. This allowed for the emergence of fresh new ideas despite how risky this was taking a gamble with multi million-dollar projects.”
Outdoor spaces and The Roof private park
PUBLIC West Hollywood extends beyond the conventional hotel experience. The property describes itself as a social destination and a place for entertainment. Notably, 75% of its public space is outdoors.
These areas accommodate dining, informal working and relaxation. They also provide settings for late-night gatherings, sports and wellness activities. Meanwhile, the food and beverage offer focuses on accessible, casual dining. The menus emphasise flavour, freshness and quality without unnecessary formality. The hotel also highlights reasonable pricing as part of its approach.
At the centre of the outdoor concept is The Roof. This private park covers three-quarters of an acre. It offers 360-degree views of the Hollywood Hills, Downtown Los Angeles and the LA Basin.
The space includes undulating landscapes, sports facilities and daily wellness classes. In addition, visitors can use picnic tables and campfires. Art installations and a 30-foot outdoor cinema screen complete the setting. The Roof accommodates private events and combines recreational and quieter spaces. Its inspiration includes major parks such as Central Park, Tuileries Garden, Hyde Park and Griffith Park. However, its design aims to establish a distinct identity within Los Angeles.
Guestrooms designed around private cinema experiences
The guestrooms continue the hotel’s emphasis on simplicity and comfort. Their design avoids unnecessary decorative features. Instead, each element aims to support ease of use and a distinctly Californian atmosphere.

One-bedroom suite
Technology also plays a central role. The rooms combine sleeping, working, entertainment and relaxation areas. Moreover, each guestroom functions as a private screening room. Every room features an 11-foot-wide, floor-to-ceiling projection surface. A specially designed short-throw laser projector delivers 5,000 lumens and 4K enhancement. The equipment aims to provide a cinematic experience within the privacy of each guestroom.
The hotel describes this feature as “THEATER ON DEMAND”. Acoustics and image clarity form part of the overall experience. Consequently, the concept brings a cinema-style environment into the guestroom.
Nightlife and a different approach to luxury
After sunset, PUBLIC West Hollywood introduces a separate nightlife experience. Schrager describes the club as: “Tantamount to dancing in a sealed-off immersive sound stage, where you can actually feel the vibrations of the music in addition to hearing it.”
The venue uses black design details, finishes and materials. Its atmosphere draws on the speakeasy tradition. It aims to support both intimate conversation and energetic dancing.
The concept also recalls Schrager’s earlier work with Studio 54. However, it presents that influence through a contemporary nightclub setting. At the heart of PUBLIC lies the principle of “LUXURY FOR ALL”. The concept moves away from traditional luxury defined by wealth and exclusivity. Instead, it emphasises comfort, freedom, personal service and choice.
The hotel describes its service as attentive, personal and unpretentious. It also places importance on style and entertainment. Ultimately, its approach seeks to make the experience accessible to a wider audience.
Schrager has also criticised the industry’s resistance to experimentation. He said: “The very system of a hotel itself and high costs to create products stifle and do not encourage or reward innovation…or taking chances or risks… to do something original. It has created a generation of hoteliers as lemmings, who keep doing the same monotonous things over and over repeating themselves but in a different color. It’s akin to a group of circus elephants where each grabs the tail of the one in front of it, parading around the circus ring. It not only results in the uniformity of all hotels in their look and operation, but also the very business model…asset free or light, and financial risk avoidance. The public deserves and wants more.”
PUBLIC West Hollywood represents both continuity and reinvention in Schrager’s hospitality career. Its concept draws on international creative talent while retaining a strong Californian identity. Through its outdoor spaces, private cinema guestrooms and nightlife offer, the hotel presents an independent approach to contemporary hospitality.
For Schrager, the project reflects a wider ambition: to challenge established hotel models and reconsider the role of hospitality in everyday life. PUBLIC West Hollywood positions the hotel as more than accommodation. It presents it as a cultural space shaped by the people, experiences and environment around it.
